Geometry of R&R Studies

The role of different types of variation can be understood by considering a simple geometrical picture.  The simplest decomposition considers the total variation to be due to part variation (PV) and measurement error variation (R&R), as shown below:

A further decomposition splits the measurement error variation into components due to measurement equipment variation and operator (or appraiser) variation.
